Uniformes is a cognate for uniforms.

Lots of schools in Latin America require​ uniforms! There's different types of uniforms. In Argentina, students use a white coat similar to a doctors uniform. In Chile and Perú, students use a Britain style uniform. Some students are proud to wear the uniforms that represent their school. Others like it out of convenience. Everyone wears the same thing!

​In Latin America, the schools do not provide school supplies, books, transportation, or food for free.

It is the responsibility of the parents to provide all necessary supplies to students, drive them to school or pay for public transportation, and send lunch.

For this reason, a lot of students do not make it to secondary school. Some families cannot afford to pay for transportation, meals and supplies. In some areas schools charge for secondary education.

Recess is called recreo en español. They referred to it as "la hora del recreo". The hour of recess. At this time students can eat their snack or lunch.

​Elementary School - escuela primaria

​Elementary schools have students in grades kindergarten to sixth grade. Students have the option to come either attend in the morning or in the afternoon. School is from 8 AM – 12 PM or from 2 PM – 6 PM.

Teachers have the option to teach either morning or afternoon, some teach both.

Lunch is served at 10 AM in Latin America. Students eat outside in the playground. There is not a cafeteria. Also, it is not required for teachers to supervise or monitor students during lunch or what is known more known as "recreo"​.

​Telesecundarias - Distance education program

​Some ranches look like this! Students who live in the middle of nowhere and do not have transportation, have the opportunity to further their education by attending a "telesecundaria". In 1969 the Mexican government created a distance learning program called telesecundarias in an effort to meet the needs of rural populations in a cost-effective manner. Telesecundarias is a system of distance education program for secondary or high school students.

​Telesecundarias have been offered to students who live in rural areas. These telesecundarias have been of serviced for years to students who are unable to travel to attend school. The classes are televised and students complete the work in a classroom. Lessons are broadcasted through satellite television. Telesecundarias replace the need for on-site specialize teachers.

​La preparatoria is considered higher education. It is not mandatory for students to attend. Those who attend can have a certificate of training, somekind of vocational training or a certificate that helps them attend college. All courses are designed to help students do well in college.

​Differences

​In Mexico, an Escolta de la bandera or Escolta is used to describe color guards and flag parties in the Spanish language. In Mexico these formations are made up of six individuals: the flag part commander and the escorts of around 5, following the french practice. The Escolta de Bandera is atradition that comes from Mexico and is primarily intended to help young people develop a sense of pride and respect for the sybolism of the Mexican flag.

​In the schools of Latin America, there are no libaries in the school! Each classroom may have a shelf for books, but students do not a school library. In the U.S., when children attend elementary school, they visit the library once a week and have the opportunity to check out books. Not in Latin America. Also student's parents have to purchase the books for the year. Each class requires a book, each student must be prepared and purchase the book before the beginning of the school year.
