Fill in the Blank
The name of the scanning hardware we use is called _____.
6
This specialized device, connected to the computer via a USB cable, is a grouping of a light projector (center) and TWO cameras, and it is used to capture simultaneous image and measurement data of objects using structured light.
Scanning Camera
7
The turn table, which is connected to the camera via a USB cable, can be used in the scanning process to rotate a set amount of turns to capture data about the object from multiple angles.
Turn Table
8
This is used in a series of scans to calibrate distance, lighting, and orientation so that scans of objects can be the most precise.

3D Scanning often uses the process of Structured Light
What is Structure Light
Structured light is the process of projecting a known pattern (often grids or horizontal bars) on to a scene. The way that these deform when striking surfaces allows vision systems to calculate the depth and surface information of the objects in the scene. (Wikipedia)
19
Structured Light
Two cameras, one projected image. It can calculate shape by how much the pattern distorts (changes from its original image)
20
Activity
On the following slide, either an object or person (not looking directly at the projector) will be placed into a structured light pattern. We will discuss how the lines appear to change.
Do this activity if you have a projector in the classroom!
21
22
Activity
Get the provided piece of graph paper and a small, rectangular block.
Being careful not to tear your paper, place your paper over your object, allowing it to tightly bend around one set of parallel edges, allowing the excess paper to continue away from it. (see pic)
Use a writing utensil to trace perimeter of each side
Repeat for the other set of sides. (see pic)
We will move on to next part together.
23
Activity
To the nearest whole unit, write the measurement for each of the 3 different rectangles (see pic for sample)
Use these measurements to calculate Surface Area for the entire rectangular prism. (Use a calculator if you need to.)
What is the volume? (LxWxH)
24
Fill in the Blank
Our Einscan SE 3D Scanner uses the ___________ light process.
25
Multiple Choice
The structured light process can accurately detect __________ in the projected pattern, allowing it to measure shape, dimension, texture, surface area, and volume of a solid object.
polymers
distortions
the color green
26
What's the problem?
Structured light can sometimes have trouble scanning objects with certain properties.
What properties should one consider when deciding if an object will scan well or not?
Talk it over with a classmate first.
27
What's the solution?
If it is difficult to scan objects that are too transparent, reflective, or dark... what could one do to make such an object scannable?
Talk it over with a classmate first.
28
Multiple Choice
Which of the following is NOT a property that affects an object's ability to be scanned by structured light?
transparent
too dark
reflective
temperature
