GRAMMAR

🔷 What is the が Particle?

It's often called the "subject marker", but this is a better definition:

It often shows to introduce new information, add emphasis, or distinguish a person or thing from all others, and it helps to answer the “who” or “what” question related to the action (verb) or description (adjective).

In other words, が not only marks the subject of the clause, but it also often carries additional information or nuances.

media

11

⑦The subject of a subordinate clause normally takes "ga" to show that the subjects of the subordinate and main clauses are different.
e.g.わたしは、ははが 日本に行くのを しりませんでした。(I didn't know that My mother was going to Japan.)

Let's outline the main characteristics of the particle "が".

media

①Marks the subject of a verb or adjective within a specific clause. e.g. きょうは てんきが いいです。

②Particle "は" and "が" are used in the same sentence with some special predicates wa follows the English subject, and ga follows the English object. e.g. わたしは ケーキが すきです。

③Often shows new or more specific information, highlighting a particular focus.
(は, on the other hand, is often information already known to the listener.)
e.g. むかし むかし おじいさんが すんでいました。(Once upon a time, there lived an old man.)

④used to emphasize one option and can exclude others, adding nuance to the statement.
e.g.くみさんが がっこうに いきました。(Kumi is the one who went to school.)

⑤Used with question words like だれが (who) or なにが (what). e.g. いつが いいですか?

⑥Used to express what you feel, see or hear. e.g. あそこに ねこが います。

1. Sentences with particles は and が (I)

media
media

When particles は and が are used in the same sentence with some special predicates は follows the English subject, and が follows the English object.

You can express people's preferences, skill levels, and abilities, what people want, need etc. using the
"Xは Yが Z" sentence construction.

Special predicates:
すきです/きらいです
じょうずです-へたです, とくいです-にがてです
ほしいです, わかります, いります(=to need)

13

(1) すきです (like) / きらいです (dislike)  : na-adjective

e.g.

えみさん は パン が すきじゃないです。・・・・Emi doesn't like bread.

わたし は ステーキ が すきです。・・・・・・・・・I like steak.

わたし は しけん が きらいです。・・・・・・・・I don't like exams.

わたしのともだち は さしみ が きらいでした。 ・・・My friend hated Sashimi.

When you want to express someone's preference, you use すき or きらい in the "Xは Yが Z" construction.

While the English words "like" and "dislike" are verbs, すき and きらい are na-adjectives, and what one likes is marked by が rather than the direct object marker を.

14

(2) じょうずです/ へたです ー とくいです/にがてです (Na-adjectives)

じょうず and へた are similar to とくい and にがて, respectively, in meaning.
One difference is that じょうず and へた express an objective judgment of someone's level of skill
in something, whereas とくい and にがて express the speaker's subjective judgment about someone's
confidence (or lack of confidence) in their skill in something.
When you want to say "I'm good at tennis, "とくい" is used rather than, じょうず, because it sounds boastfull to say that you are objectively good at something.

e.g.

わたし は テニス が とくいです。・・・・・・・・・・I'm good at tennis.

じょうず and へた are commonly used for things like sports and foreign languages, but not for school subjects (e.g.,math,history). For things like these, とくい and にがて are used.

e.g.

✖ トムさん は すうがく が じょうずです。

〇 トムさん は すうがく が とくいです。・・・・・・・・・・He is good at math.

15

(3) ほしいです (want) : i-adjective

e.g.

あなた は なに が ほしいですか?

わたし は くるま が ほしいです。

(4) わかる (understand) : verb

e.g.

ジョンさん は 日本語 が わかります。

わたし は フランス語 が ぜんぜん わかりません。

(5) いる (need) : verb G.1

e.g.

あなたたち は じしょ が いりますか?

きのう わたし は かさ が いりました。
