​Around 800, Vikings came to the region from the north to trade. Later, a group of them called the Rus conquered parts of present-day European Russia, Belarus, and Ukraine. Starting around 1000, the Rus adopted Eastern Orthodox Christianity. They also adopted other parts of Byzantine culture.

In the 1200s, the Mongols overran the Rus. They conquered much of Asia as well. Trade between what is now Russia and Southwest Asia grew. In western Russia, the state of Muscovy, centered in Moscow, gained greatly from the trade. By the late 1300s, Muscovy threw off Mongol rule.

Over time, Muscovy conquered a large area. It stretched from the Arctic Ocean to the Caspian Sea and east to the Ural Mountains. Muscovy grew wealthy through the work of serfs. These peasants had few rights and no property. They were bound to live and work on the land owned by a lord.

​In 1613, Michael Romanov became tsar or ruler of Russia. The Romanov dynasty ruled Russia for the next 300 years. Under Michael, the Russians extended their kingdom east across Siberia. In the late 1600s, Peter the Great sought to extend Russian power. He brought the ideas and technology of western Europe to Russia. He also conquered lands along the Baltic Sea. Later, Catherine the Great further expanded the kingdom to the east, south, and west.
