Contemporary Vs. Modern

What is the difference?

In this lesson and in the more detailed history in the next, we will learn that the terms modern and contemporary refer to vastly different periods. Modern Art is not the same as Contemporary Art, although they could share some characteristics, sources and influences. (Datuin etal. 2016)

Contemporary Vs. Modern

Context

It is the state or condition with which the art was originally made. Therefore, knowing the background or the factors influencing the creation of an art is its context.

Context gives the artist inspiration in making the art work and the viewer a general idea on how to view a particular artwork.

7

Aspects of Context

History and/or Chronology

Also known as Historical Context. It states that the characteristics, style, and the inherent meaning of the artwork is influenced by its position/location in history. Thus, arts vastly differ from period to period and from era to era.
