President James E. Faust

It is striking to me how often Christ is connected with covenants in the Book of Mormon. The message seems to be that if we desire the blessings Christ has to offer we must become his covenant people...and the temple seems to be the logical extension of our covenant relationship with Christ. While baptism seems to focus on the cleansing of the soul, the temple seems to focus on the development of the soul. Each covenant provides guidance of what we ought to believe and do in order to become like God. And implicit in those covenants is the divine power to achieve what is clearly beyond our natural abilities.

"While baptism seems to focus on the cleansing of the soul, the temple seems to focus on the development of the soul." - President Faust

If we are too causal in approaching this doctrine [of Pres. Faust] we could believe that coming unto Christ simply means confessing our belief in Christ, perhaps repenting of a few sins, and accepting baptism and confirmation. But if that is as high as we climb on our journey of the soul, we will miss the majesty of coming to know Him as He knows us and discovering - through our sometimes heart-wrenching exertion toward Him - the fulness of the godly potential within us.

A friend once asked, "If Jesus Christ is at the center of the gospel and the temple, why doesn't the endowment teach the story of the life of Christ? What's all this about Adam and Eve?" We have come to believe that while the story of Christ's life is the story of giving His Atonement, the story of Adam and Eve is the story of receiving His Atonement. And their story is our story.
