Causes of Urbanisation

Migration

• Negative effects:

  • Young adults leave rural areas

  • "Brain drain"

  • Not enough people to keep the services running

• Positive effects:

  • Less pressure on resources

  • Remittances​

Higher Standard of Living

• Urbanisation may lead to people becoming better off.

Examples: China's cities and industries grew exponentially beginning 1990s.

Problems

• Insuffient jobs, housing and other services may lead to people becoming poor.

• Unemployment, underemployment, overcrowding and pollution.​

Examples: Cities in developing countries (LEDCs).

More than 2/3 of the worlds urban population is now in Africa, Asia, and Latin America, and the carribean.

Megacity

• In 1950s, there were only two megacities, 18 in 2000, and 31 in 2016.

• Some cities like Mexico City and Kolkata experience slower population growth

• ​Some like Dhaka in Bangladesh experiences high population growth

• Some parts of the world, cities' growing urban footprints and rising populations are creating an urban region of clustered cities called a megalopolis.
