Definitions:

Like Terms: Like terms are terms that share the same variable. We can combine like terms by adding the coefficient (the number in front of the variable).

Ex: 2x and 5x would become 7x. 3y and 2x cannot be combined because they have different variables.

Distributive Property: The distributive property allows us to multiply a number outside the parenthesis by both numbers inside the parenthesis.

Ex: a (b + c) = ab + ac or 2(x + 5) = 2x + 2(5) = 2x + 10

3

How to solve by combining like terms:

3x + 5x + 2x = 100

w + 0.5w - 0.25w - 0.25w + 6w = 49

-3m + 5m - 2m + 15m + 20 = 50

4

Multiple Choice

Solve for x:

3x + 2x + x = 18

1

x = 18

2

x = 3

3

x= 5

4

x = 6

5

How to solve when variables are on both sides:

2x + 5x - 10 = 8x - 20

14y - 3 = 23y + 24

11w - 5w + 7 = -5w - 114

6

How to solve with distributive property:

2(x + 5) = 100

3(4x + 5) - 15 = 10x - 12

x(4 + 5) - 6x = 4(3x - 5) - 7

7

Multiple Choice

Solve for y:

y + 12y - 8y - 3y - 14 = -4y - 4y + 86

1

y = 14

2

y = -3

3

y = 10

4

y = 100

8

Multiple Choice

Solve for m:

10(m + 12) = 140

1

m = 5

2

m = 10

3

m = 3

4

m = 2

9

Multiple Choice

Solve for t:

4(t - 5) = 3(t - 6)

1

t = 5

2

t = 3

3

t = 6

4

t = 2

10

Open Ended

Solve for w:

3(w - 9) - 3 = 4(2w + 8) + 8

11

Conclusion: 2 complete sentences about what you have learned.
