Roots

There are 2 root systems-

  • Root System

  • Shoot system [stem]

The roots grow in the soil . The stem also known as shoot, grows above the soil. Both are very important for a plant to grow. The root is the first part of the plant when the seed germinates.

Functions of Roots

  • Roots hold the plant firmly to the ground and support the plant in the soil as it grows.

  • Roots absorb water in the soil. The water has nutrients dissolved in it. We call these nutrients, Minerals. Without water and minerals a plant cannot grow or survive. Water from the soil

enters the root through special structures called root

hair that grow out of roots .
