Knowledge Review: Planting a Naysayer
Let's review what we learned last week!
3
An opposing viewpoint, and "overcoming" the opposing viewpoint, makes your ideas and writing much more PERSUASIVE!
Why is this the case? Because it shows confidence to plant a naysayer (opposing viewpoint), and it shows creativity to respond to or rebut the naysayer!
4
"Planting a naysayer" means you have typed the opposing viewpoint's argument succinctly (briefly) and accurately in your own words. Be careful to not sound biased or dismissive of the opposing viewpoint; be fair but but write succintly (don't make it too long).
EXAMPLE TEMPLATE PHRASE 1:
Of course, many will probably disagree on the grounds that ________________________________. (Insert 2-3 sentences from the opposing viewpoint.) However, evidence strongly suggests that _____________________________________________. (Mention a strong rebuttal in 2-3 sentences.)
5
Example Naysayer Template Phrase 1 in Use:
Of course, many will probably disagree on the grounds that many professional black athletes are seen as popular and wealthy. However, evidence such as recorded outbursts by former L.A. Clippers owner Donald Sterling strongly suggests that an old regime of racist athletic team presidents and owners still see black athletes in terms of criminality (Goyette).
6
You can also make a concession when you make an argument. A concession means that you grant or acknowledge that the other side has some valid objections, but you must still maintain your own argument/ position.
EXAMPLE TEMPLATE 2:
Proponents / opponents of _____________ are right to argue that __________, but they exaggerate when they claim that ___________________.
EXAMPLE IN USE:
Opponents of Title IX are correct that some men's athletic programs have been shut down, but they exaggerate when they claim that this has caused pain and financial losses to men's programs. By and large, dominant men's athletic pograms such as football and baseball have been untouched, and are funded in lopsided ways compared to women's programs such as swimming or softball.
7

It is important to represent opposing viewpoints fairly, but they should be kept concise (2-3 sentences) for a short essay.
