Present progressive

English: am, is, are 'doing something'

In both Spanish and English, the present progressive tense is used to talk about actions that are going on right now. In English, the present progressive tense involves a form of 'to be' and a verb form ending in '-ing.'

In Spanish, it is formed with the verb estar and a present participle

To form the present progressive tense in Spanish, take the form of estar that agrees with the subject, and follow it with the present participle.

10

Form of estar + present progressive

For -ar verbs, remove the -ar ending and add -ando.For -er and -ir verbs, remove the -er or -ir ending and add -iendo.

11

Objects with present progressive

In sentences that have object pronouns (direct, indirect, or reflexive object pronouns), the pronoun can be placed either before the form of estar or after (and attached to) the present participle

For example:

Lo estamos comprando. Estamos comprándolo.

There's no difference in meaning involved here; both sentences mean exactly the same thing.
