The Effects of Mutation

​DNA contains the code of instructions for cells. Sometimes, an error occurs when the code is

copied. Such errors are called mutations.

​Follow the Procedure to compare Protein X to Protein Y.

Protein X is going to be represented by this code: Methionine—Phenylalanine—Tryptophan—Asparagine—Isoleucine—STOP.

1. Use the genetic code table to determine one possible sequence of RNA (codons) to code for this information.

2. Write the DNA code (pairing DNA) that would produce this RNA sequence.

1. Now, cause a mutation in the gene sequence that you just determined by deleting the fourth base (4th letter) in the DNA sequence.

2. Write this new DNA sequence, this will be fProtein Y.

2. Write the amino acid sequence that would result from this mutation in your gene, which will be called Protein Y.
