​Synonyms

​are words that are similar, or have a related meaning. They can be lifesavers when you want to avoid repeating the same word over and over. Also, sometimes the word you have in mind might not be the most appropriate word, which is why finding the right synonym can come in handy.

​Examples are:

​long - lengthy , lasting, lingering , extended , in a moment

enemy - foe , opponent , rival , antagonist, the opposition

warm- hot , cozy , toasty , summery , mild, temperate

famous - historical , well known, celebrated, popular, famed, prominent

yelling - shouting , scream, cry out

shut - closed , slam, put the lid on, lock, seal

sad - lonely , unhappy, regretful, down, miserable

fast - quick, fast, swift, rapid, lively, brisk

dull - boring , tiresome, dry, unexciting

last - final , rearmost, ultimate, prior, at the end

​Antonyms

​are words that have opposite meaning. Using antonyms as a context clue for word meaning is a great help. The function of antonyms, in both speech and writing, is important because they highlight or emphasize the main idea of a text or speech.
