SOURCES and USES of SOUNDS
Learning Competency Code S3FE-IIIa-b-1 Learning Competency Uses and Sources of sound in everyday life
LEARNING OBJECTIVES At the end of the module, you should be able to: 1. Describe the different sources and uses of sound in everyday life. 2. List the sounds they hear in different places. 3.Give the importance of sound to our life.
3
What Is It
SOURCES AND USES OF SOUND 1. Sound and Its Uses Sound is produced when matter vibrates. Vibration is the back and forth movement of matter. There is no sound when there is no vibration. Sound travels in the form of waves. At low volume the vibration of the speaker is low. As you change it to high volume, the speaker vibrates faster and faster.

4
What does it show? The faster the vibration of an object is, the higher the pitch of sound is produced. You can hear sounds everywhere.
When birds are singing ---
When dogs are barking ---
When vehicle pass by ---

2. Sources of Sounds A. Musical Instruments Pianos, drums, and xylophones are percussive instruments. With these, a hammer strikes an object and makes it vibrate. The piano wire, the drum head and the xylophone bar vibrate in different ways, making waves in the air that we then hear. These instruments have built-in amplification. The large body of the piano acts as a sounding board, making the vibration louder.

6
Brass and wind instruments work differently. They set a column of air into resonance, making strong vibrations. of the instruments. They usually have a flared opening to achieve natural amplification.

B. Living Things Animals and people make sounds with their vocal cords, their mouths and other body parts.
Vocal cords vibrate making sound. Insects rapidly rub their legs, wings or other organs to make noise. In the can carry for miles. Squeezing and rubbing body parts turn mechanical energy into sound energy.

Some objects produce loud sound and some produce soft sound. A big bell, whistle, siren, gong, and big drum, thunder, and a horn make loud sound. Ocean waves, small bells, chirping birds, a flute, and a ukulele produce soft sound.

9
How will you know if an object will produce a noise, a pleasant sound, or musical tone? A guitar, a piano, and a flute produce musical sound. Pounding the table, hammering a steel tank, or striking a drum with sticks loudly and unevenly produce noise and unpleasant sound.

10
A horn of a car is used to give signal. It can also call the attention of pedestrians or other drivers. But if you blow the horn louder and repeatedly it makes unpleasant or annoying sound. A blaring siren of an ambulance signals emergency. A whistle of a policeman is used for signal, too.

MACHINE
In industry, machines make sound in ways similar to musical instruments.
However, machines operate at higher speeds and with more power than instruments. They can be designed with sound-absorbing materials to make them quiet, but they are seldom to make sound pleasant. Loud, rapid impacts of metal on stone make the percussive noise of a jackhammer. Metal parts, rubbing from friction, create the squeal of brakes.

12
NATURE
The energy released when falling water hits, a beach makes the sound of surf. Lightning explosively heats air, sending sound waves we hear as thunder. Wind, produced by heat from the sun, makes noise through setting objects into vibration. Wind can howl against itself when it gusts.
