Asexual Reproduction
2
3
4
Bacteria Binary Fission
5
Rapid population growth
Requires less energy
All organisms are capable of reproduction (not just females)
One organism can make a population
Less likely to biome extinct
Each offspring is a genetic copy of the parent
Asexual Benefits
6
There is NO genetic diversity (clones)
Susceptible to disease
Can’t adapt to a changing environment.
Asexual Disadvantage
7
Asexual Reproduction Types
Binary Fission or Multiple Fissions
Budding
Vegetative Propagation
Regeneration
8
Binary Fission
Bacteria some protists
One parent splits into two offsprings
9
Budding
hydra, cactus
New growth off a parent
10
Regeneration
worms, sea stars, geckos, planarian, worms
Regrow a lost limb or a whole other organism on a cut-off piece.
11
Vegetative Propagation
ivy, grases, strawberries, spiker plants...
New plants grow off an existing part of an old plant.
12
Sexual Reproduction
By R Marsh, PhD.
13
14
SEXUAL REPRODUCTION (MEOSIS)
Two organisms of the same species
Sex cells called gametes
Animals have sperm(male) and ovum (female)
Plants have pollen (sperm) and ovum (egg)
Two sex cells fuse together (fusion) to create new and genetically different offspring.
15
Advantages of Sexual Reproduction:
More adaptability
More variation
Greater chance of mutation
Greater chance of survivability with environmental change.
16
Disadvantages of Sexual Reproduction:
Requires two individuals with opposing gamest (sex cells)
Must use a lot of energy to nourish and grow a new organism.

Multiple Choice
The diagram below represents reproduction in a yeast cell. The genes in the bud are identical to the genes in the parent. This type of production of offspring is a form of
sexual reproduction
asexual reproduction
gene manipulation
genetic engineering

Multiple Select
Which of the following statements are true about asexual reproduction? (chose all that apply)
Asexual reproduction requires only one parent.
The offspring in asexual reproduction are clones of the parent.
The offspring in asexual reproduction are produced by mitosis.
The offspring in asexual reproduction are produced by meiosis.
