What is Question Tags?

Question tag is a type of sentence used to ask questions.

• It is a statement followed by mini-question.

• We usually used question tags​ to ask for confirmation.

• They mean something ​like: " Is that right?" or " Do you agree?"

Basic structure of Question Tag:

Statement + auxiliary verb + Subjective pronouns

Before we continue, Lets talk about Auxiliary Verbs and Subjective Pronouns

• Verb to be: is, are, am, was, were

• Verb to have: has, have, had

• Verb to do: does, do, did

• Modal verbs: may, might, can, will, should, etc.

Auxiliary verbs:

• He - my father, the boy

• She - my mother, that woman

• It - a cat, one ship

• They - the boys, the pencils

• We - some of us, my mom and I

• I

• You​

Subjective pronouns:

• Positive Statements Question Tags

• Negative Statements Question Tags​

Types of Question tags:

• If the statement is positive, the question tag must be in negative.

POSITIVE STATEMENT QUESTION TAGS:

Adilla is leaving, isn't she?

*Notice that the tag repeats the auxiliary verb from the statement and change it to negative of positive ( depending on the statement).

*The subjective pronoun is also used to replace the noun (Adilla).​

For example:

The boys visited their grandparents yesterday, didn't they?

Here, we used verb to do (do, does, did) as replacement.

Exceptions: When we used action verb (main verb).

Similar with Positive Statement but in reverse.

In other word, Negative statement + Positive Tag.​

Negative Statement Question Tags:

• Some of us aren't hungry, are we?

• You can't carry all the boxes by yourself​, can you?

• Salma doesn't talk to Ryo anymore, does she?​
