A linking verb links, or joins, the subject of a sentence with a word that identifies or describes the subject.

A hint to help identify linking verbs:

SOMETIMES, not always, a way to determine if the verb is functioning as an action verb or a linking verb is to substitute the words "am", “is”, or "are" for the verb in question. If the sentence still makes sense, then it is probably a linking verb.
