What is Hip Hop?

​A Culture, an Art Movement, Music, Dance

  • ​Created by people living in The Bronx, NY (influence from African Americans, Latino & Caribbean Americans in that population)

  • Created in 1970s during the "Decade of Fire"​

  • 4 Pillars: DJ (disc jockey), MC, Graffiti, dance​

The Bronx 1960/70s

White Flight

  • beautiful suburb apartments to attract more people to live there, but neighborhood wasn't appealing for people, so the White population ​fled

  • Slumlords could not afford the properties​, so the building managers would burn down their places to collect the insurance- "Decade of Fire"

  • If people weren't moving out of the buildings, they shut off amenities ​
