Today's Objectives
Use appropriate argumentative techniques/strategies
Persuade by winning the trust of readers (ethical appeal), appealing to their emotions (emotional appeal), and convincing them through the logic of argument (logical appeal)
3
Arguing a controversy using Claims of Fact, Value, Policy
Fact: What conclusion do you want readers to come to regarding some aspect of your topic? What should they accept as true? Many times, claims of facts are cause/effect statements, because the truth you want the reader to accept is observable/measurable.
Self-plagiarism will hinder students' development of critical thinking skills and stunt their intellectual growth.
Value: What is ethical/unethical, right/wrong, valuable or not about some aspect of your topic? How do you want a reader to perceive the issue? These are more subjective and less measurable, because though we have a basic idea of right/wrong, ethical/unethical, these labels take on different meanings with context and culture.
Similarities between music tracks are ethical and expected given that artists develop their styles based on inuence.
Policy: What is a course of action you think should be taken in order to address some aspect of your topic? What should be done about it, either immediately or long term?
To reduce plagiarism, colleges should require changes to assignment requirements in course each semester.
