Located on China's central coast and is one of the country's biggest city and a global financial hub.

Shanghai

The city was developed on a flat, low-lying alluvial plain on the banks of the Yangtze river and the confluence of the Huangpu and Suzhou rivers.

  • 1844 - British, French, American, and Japanese owned land in Shanghai

  • 1920 - it became China's largest and most importantly city

  • After WW2, foreign influence declined​

Growth of Shanghai

Shanghai has been one of Asia's major ports and has a varied history. When it reopened in 1970s, Shanghai was one of the 14 open cities that reopened its economy to the world.​

Shanghai economic zone was established in 1983 and massive economic zone was established in the eastern hinterland around Pudong.

Banks, stock exchanges and insurance companies moved in.​

By 2000, over 3000 skyscrapers had been built.​
