WHAT IS AN ADVERB?​

AN ADVERB IS A WORD THAT MODIFIES A VERB, ADJECTIVE OR ANOTHER ADVERB.

​​​An adverb that modifies a verb usually answer one of five questions:

  1. WHEN? Adverb of time

  2. WHERE? Adverb of place

  3. HOW? Adverb of manner

  4. HOW OFTEN? Adverb of frequency

  5. TO WHAT EXTENT? ​Adverb of degree

When an adverb modifies an adjective, it tells the extent of the adjective.

  • The pen is cheap. Adjective

    Very is an adverb because it tells how cheap the pen is. ​

  • This outfit is elegant.

  • This outfit is incredibly elegant. ​

​ Incredibly is an adverb modifying the adjective elegant

​When an adverb modifies an adverb, it tells the extent of the adverb.

    Quite is an adverb because it tells how fast Usain runs.

​ Too is an adverb modifying the adverb early.
