Flatworms are the least complex of all types of worms. There are around 29,000 species.

They are members of the Phylum Platyhelminthes.

  • They get their name from the Greek work "platy" meaning flat and "helminth", meaning worm. Their body is flattened​ dorso-ventrally.

Flatworms are acoelomates and have thin, solid bodies.

  • Acoelomates lack a true body cavity.​

​They are the simplest animals with bilateral symmetry and triploblastic (composed of three fundamental cell layers).
