Why 3 branches?

​Separation of powers

​The division of government responsibilities into distinct branches to limit any one branch from exercising the core functions of another.

The founding fathers did not want a king.​

​This is where laws are written.

​Legislative branch

1. ​100 members

2. 2 for each state

3. ​Approves cabinet members

4. Approves judges

5. ​Must approve laws

​Each state has 2 senators regardless of size

1. ​Number of representatives based on population

2. Numbers determined by census

3. All representatives serve 2 year terms​

4. Alabama has 7 U.S. House Representatives

5. Must approve laws​

No limit to how many terms a Representative can serve​

1. ​President can only serve 2 terms

2. Can veto or sign laws

3. Appoints judges and cabinet members

4. Can grant pardons for crimes​

5. Can declare states of emergency​

​Known as Commander-in-Chief or Head of State

​Executive Branch
