Moeten

Must en have to betekenen allebei "moeten". Echter gaat must over iets wat van jezelf moet, terwijl have to een verplichting is van iemand anders/buitenaf.

Must I wear this tie? Am I obliged to wear this tie? (What do you think?)

Do I have to wear this tie? Am I obliged to wear this tie? (Is there a rule about ties?)

Verleden tijd en toekomst

In de verleden tijd en de toekomst gebruik je geen must. Hier moet je dan have to voor vervoegen naar had to of will have to.

Let op! Ontkenningen betekenen iets totaal anders!

Mustn't geeft verbod aan.

You mustn't drive. You are prohibited to drive. You are not allowed to drive.

•  Don't have to geeft aan dat het niet hoeft, dus dat het geen verplichting is.

You don't have to drive. You are not obliged to drive (but you can if you want to).
