Today's plan: Study 3.1

  • Review study 3.1

  • review hace + que + time

  • ser vs estar

4

Hace + que ...

to do what?

  • I have been sitting here for two hours.

  • I have been studying Spanish for two years.

  • How long have you been playing guitar?

These are all hace + que time expressions.

To say that you or someone else has been doing something for a certain amount of time, you should use the following formula.

Hace + how much time it's been + que + present tense of the verb

5

Hace + que...

Hace tres años que vivimos en Massachusetts. (We've lived in Massachusetts for three years.)

Hace dos días que estoy enfermo. (I've been sick for two days.)

Hace cuatro horas que miramos la televisión. (We've been watching television for four hours.)

This hace + que expression does not translate literally. Hacer means to make or to do, so the last example literally translates to "It makes 4 hours since we've been watching TV."

Also remember that this formula uses only the hace form of the verb hacer. You will never need to use a different conjugation of hacer for this construction.
