Equation of a Circle

(x - h)2 + (y - k)2 = r2

Where r is the radius of the circle and (h, k) is the center of the circle.

Example: What is the equation for a circle with radius of 4 and centered at the point (-2, 3).

r = 4, h = -2 and k = 3

(x - (-2))2 + ( y - 3)2 = 42

(x + 2)2 + (y - 3)2 = 16

Equation of a Circle

(x - h)2 + (y - k)2 = r2

Where r is the radius of the circle and (h, k) is the center of the circle.

Example: Given the equation of a circle: (x - 4)2 + (y + 5)2 = 36, what is the center of the circle and its radius.

x - h = x - 4; so h = 4

y - k = y + 5; so k = -5

r2 = 36; so r = √36 and r = 6

The circle is centerd at (4, -5) with a radius of 6
