Some people think that the plant food they give to house and garden plants is food for the plants. It isn’t.
Plants make their own food—in the form of sugars—using water, carbon dioxide, and sunlight. So what is the “food” that people add to plants? It’s fertilizer. Fertilizer is a mixture of minerals, such as potassium, calcium, and phosphorus. It helps plants grow but doesn’t supply them with energy as food does.
When is Food Not Food?
3
Review
Plants are organisms that make their own food (glucose, a simple sugar) through photosynthesis.
Some text here about the topic of discussion
4
Multiple Choice
Organisms, such as plants and algae, that make their own food are called......
Heterotrophs
autotrophs
vegetarian
5
6
Reactants and Products
The "ingredients" that are needed for a green plant to make it's own food are called reactants. These reactants are...
Water - absorbed from the soil
Carbon dioxide (co2) from the air
NOTE: while light energy from the sun is required to undergo photosynthesis, it is not technically considered a reactant.

Multiple Choice
What internal structure is responsible for transporting water from the roots throughout the rest of the plant?
Stems
Phloem
leaves
xylem
14
Multiple Select
What 3 "ingredients" are needed for photosynthesis to occur? Check all that apply.
Light energy from the sun
Oxygen
Carbon Dioxide
Water
15
Multiple Choice
What are reactants?
"ingredients" necessary to undergo photosynthesis
something that is produced by the plant during photosynthesis
Something that is helpful, but not necessary, for a plant to undergo photosynthesis
16
Products of Photosynthesis
Two products are made during photosynthesis. The products are a result of the chemical reaction that occurs inside the plant.
These products are...
Glucose (a simple sugar)
Oxygen (YAY! just what we need!)
17
18
Multiple Choice
What internal structure is responsible for transporting food throughout the plant?
Stems
Phloem
leaves
xylem
19
Products of Photosynthesis
Glucose is transported through the plant as sugar. Plants can also turn this glucose into starch that can be stored and used later.
20
Products of Photosynthesis
Oxygen is a product released during photosynthesis. The oxygen moves out of the plant through the stomata. This process puts oxygen back into our atmosphere.
21
Multiple Choice
What are the products of photosynthesis? Check all that apply.
Carbon Dioxide
Oxygen
Water
Glucose

Think Time: Part 1
Draw a diagram to show the process of photosynthesis. Use the vocabulary from this lesson to label the diagram.
26
Think Time: Part 2
With a partner, share your diagram and what you learned about photosynthesis.
Be prepared to share!

Multiple Choice
In what way does plant nutrition differe from human nutrition?
Plants make their own nutrients; humans must consume theirs.
Plant nutrition consists mainly of protein; human nutrition consists mainly of carbohydrates.
Plants consume nutrients; humans produce theirs.
Both plants and animals must consume their nutrients.
