Indirect Object Pronouns

In the English sentence 'I kick it to him,' there are two object pronouns: the same direct object, it, and an indirect object, him. The direct object is a ball, and the indirect object is Paul. Paul is the indirect object because I'm not kicking him, I´m kicking a ball to him. He is receiving the benefit of the action, but not the action itself. Usually, indirect objects are people.

Remember that when you have two pronouns that start with L, the le turns into a se.

Pronouns and progressive & commands

1.  Double pronouns (direct and indirect) always go together in a sentence. They cannot be split up by any other word. They must always be placed next to each other, and the indirect object pronoun must always come first. Rosario se la ordena.

2.  In simple sentences, pronouns go before the conjugated verb. Rosario me la escribio.

3.  When used with the present progressive, pronouns can go before the conjugated verb, or they can be tagged on to the participle.

Rosario se lo esta barriendo / Rosario barriendoselo

WHERE DO THEY GO ?!?

38

Pronouns & progressive & commands

5.  In affirmative commands, you must tag pronouns on to the verb. If it is a double pronoun, or if the verb has more than one syllable, add an accent mark to preserve correct pronunciation. Dime. Dimelo.

6.  In negative commands, pronouns must go before the verb. They cannot be added to the end of the verb.

parts 1 & 2 are what we went over today. Part 3 is in 3.1.6 study, but we will review further on Thursday.

43

To form an usted command, follow these easy steps:

  • Start with the present tense yo form.

  • Delete the final o.

  • Add the 'opposite vowel.' For ar verbs, the opposite vowel is e, and for er and ir verbs, the opposite vowel is a. You can also think of this as conjugating to the opposite type of verb; -ar become like -er verbs, and -er / -ir verbs become like -ar verbs.
