• The Civil War was fought between the northern and southern states during the years of ​1861 - 1865.

• ​As the United States grew, the South wanted to expand slavery, but the North wanted to abolish it.

Many battles were fought here.

• This caused widespread destruction

• Many freed slaves struggled because they had no money or education

• The country was in crisis!​

• Created by Lincoln, it helped over 4 million freed slaves after the war

• Slavery had been going on for over 200 years at this point! ​

Accomplishments

• Built hospitals

• Provided food

• Built over 1,000 schools and colleges

• This provided money to states for building universities ​that were for everyone no matter their skin tone

• Prior to the Civil War, there were very few colleges for black people.
