3 approaches to health promotion
Lifestyle / Behavioural approach
A lifestyle approach to health promotion is based on the idea that the major causes of morbidity and mortality within Australia are diseases resulting from poor lifestyle behaviour choices. This approach to health promotion uses a variety of strategies that target an individual’s lifestyle and behaviour in order to empower people to improve their health.
5
Preventative Medical approach
e.g., childhood immunisation, cancer screening
The preventative medical approach is predominantly utilised by the health sector and uses medical interventions (via medicine or technology) to prevent certain illnesses from occurring or limiting the severity, leading to improved health outcomes. There are three levels to this approach:
6
Multiple Select
Primary prevention/intervention: Health-promotion actions that are targeted at the whole population and aim to stop the disease from ever developing. Which of the following are PRIMARY interventions?
HPV vaccination program
childhood immunisation programs for whooping cough, polio, chicken pox and measles.
pap smears
regular check-ups and monitoring
prostate check for men over 50
7
Multiple Select
Secondary prevention/intervention: Targets high-risk groups and is focused on early detection to reduce the risk of the disease developing. Which of the following are SECONDARY interventions?
childhood immunisation programs
prostate check for men over 50
pap smears
medications to manage high blood pressure
8
Multiple Select
Tertiary prevention/intervention: Aims to prevent the recurrence of a disease in an individual once they have been diagnosed and treated. Which of the following are examples of TERTIARY intervention?
pap smears
medications to manage high blood pressure
childhood immunisation programs
regular check-ups and monitoring
9
The public-health approach to health promotion uses a more holistic approach to health promotion through recognition of the complex interaction of determinants on health. This approach advocates a multi-faceted approach to health promotion and the importance of involvement from all levels of society to bring about positive change.
