​In English, the present progressive is expressed:

am / is / are [verb]-ing

You can only use this tense when the action is happening

right now.

Indicate on the following slides whether or not we could use the present progressive in Spanish.

Each answer will have TWO words:

1- the form of ESTAR (for am/is/are)

2- the -ANDO/-IENDO form of the action that is happening.​

Take off the -AR and add

-ANDO.

• doblar --> doblando

• cruzar --> cruzando

Forming the PRESENT PARTICIPLE:

(-ing)​

Take off the -ER/IR and add

-IENDO.

• comer --> comiendo

• vivir --> viviendo

• vender --> vendiendo

• escribir --> escribiendo

-ER/IR verbs

Take off the -AR and add

-ANDO.

IRREGULAR PRESENT PARTICIPLES

​​If a verb ends in -IR annnnnd has a stem change, the present participle will have a stem change as well.

​

• The​ O will change to a U.

  • Example: The present participle of DORMIR ​is: durmiendo

• The​ E will change to an I.

  • Example: The present participle of SERVIR ​is: sirviendo​
