Review on last class

The negative in the past progressive tense is created using was not or were not + the ing (present participle) form of the verb.

Note: In general, use these contractions in the negative: wasn’t, weren’t. Save the long forms for when you want to create emphasis.

Past Progressive Negative

It refers to a continuing action or state that was happening at some point in the past. The past continuous tense is formed by combining the past tense of to be (i.e., was/were) with the verb’s present participle (-ing word).

Past Progressive Questions

Firstly, check that you know how to make the past simple with 'be' (subject + was / were). Then just add verb-ing. To make a 'yes / no' question, put 'was / were' in front of the subject:

  • Was I listening?

  • Were you working?

  • Was she working?

  • Was he living in Paris at the time?

  • Was it snowing when you arrived?

  • Were we eating?

  • Were they studying?

5

  • Why was I working?

  • Where were you living?

  • How was she travelling?

  • Where was he going?

  • Why was it snowing in the summer?

  • What were we eating?

  • Why were they studying?

To make a 'wh' question put the question word at the beginning:

Who

What

Where

Why and How
