Multistep Equations

Move the items so that the variable remains positive! This will help later in inequalities!​

Hint:

Move all the variables to one side of the equations and move the numbers to the other.

4 + 2 - 4x = 12 x + 9 - 2x

6 - 4x = 10x + 9​

Example:

Distribute or combine like terms to simply the expression on both sides of the equal sign.

Simplify:

Step 1:

6 - 4x = 10x +9

+4x ​ + 4x

6 = 14x + 9

-9 -9

-3 = 14x​

Example:

Move all the variables by adding or subtracting to one side first.

Then add or subtract to move numbers.​

Add or ​Subtract:

Step 2:

-3 = 14x

14 14

-3/14 = x or x = -3/14​

Example:

Divide (or multiply if its a fractions) by the coefficient (number in front of the decimal)

to get the variable by itself. ​
