Nowadays you can use so many different coloured eye shadows, but did you know there is a theory behind colour?

The Colour Wheel

13

Colour Theory

Before the extremely creative, highly pigmented eye shadow looks we use/see in make-up nowadays, the eye shadow pallets were much more subtle and make-up followed strict rules and routines.

Eye shadow colours were chosen based on your own eye colour. Contrasting colours/tones chosen to emphasise the colour in your eyes, to make them pop! The colours chosen were not at random but rather following the theory of the colour wheel.

A theory that the colour/tone opposite your eye colour on the colour wheel, will compliment them, emphasising your eyes more.

This theory is also used to neutralise unwanted colours in the skin. The opposite colour on the colour wheel to the colour you can see in your skin, will hide it.

14

The colour wheel consists of, firstly:

Primary Colours

  • Blue

  • Red

  • Yellow

15

media

When they are mixed in various combinations of two, they produce:

Secondary Colours

  • Green

  • Orange

  • Purple

16

media

When they are mixed in various combinations, they produce:

Tertiary Colours

  • Shades of Blue / Red / Yellow

  • Shades of Green / Orange / Purple

17

Whichever colour you look at draw a diagonal line to the other side of the wheel. This tells you which colour compliments or neutralises.

Concealing with Colour

Neutralising is the term used when one colour cancels out another.

Our skin can show many problems we might want to hide and concealer might not be enough alone. Colour correcting allows us to neutralise unwanted colour in our skin before using a concealer.

Just what can we neutralise with colour?
