​Adverbs of manner tell us how something happens. They are usually placed either after the main verb or after the object.

• He swims well.

• He ran quickly.

• She spoke softly.

• James coughed loudly to attract her attention.

​Adverbs of manner

To make adverbs of manner, we usually add -ly to the adjective. For example,

• quick – quickly

• careful – carefully

• gentle – gently​

When an adjective ends in -y we change the -y to -i then add -ly. For example,

• happy – happily

• greedy – greedily

• easy – easily​
