Fun Fact- he actually thought he found the islands west of India, which is why he called the Native Americans INDIANS

New Spain

  • Wanted to spread their catholic religion & harshly treated native Americans in order to convert.

  • Conquistadors found gold leading to a rush

  • Geography was hot and mostly grasslands

  • Economy was raising livestock​

​Reminder- the colonists geography DETERMINED their economy! New Spain was too hot and dry for growing crops on a large scale which led to them raising cattle, sheep, goats, etc.

New France

  • Geography was cold with many water sources

  • Their Economy was trading fur such as beaver​

Fun fact- when the french set up their colony, the King demanded a certain number of beaver furs to be set aside for him. The King never collected his beaver furs, so there is still a room in Canada full of 300-400 year old beaver skins waiting for royalty to pick up.

Similarities between these colonies

Geography

rocky soils and long winters made farming on a large scale difficult. Fast-moving rivers, forested terrain and long coastlines. ​

Economy

Fishing (long coastlines helped ships dock), lumber milling (fast moving rivers helped cut wood with hydroelectricity​ & forests provide lumber), Shipbuilding (combination of all the geographic features)

Puritans (pilgrims) were being religiously persecuted in England, which caused the pilgrims to come to the Americas. The town of plymouth rock was established in 1620 where they wrote the mayflower compact. Church and state were NOT separate, you had to be a member of the church in order to vote. Major port city was Boston
