How are you feeling today?

Today's class
You have an assignment that is due at the end of class.
You will work in pairs, but each of you still has to upload your own document to Blackboard.
Make sure both your names are on the assignment.
We will do it together - We will show you a thing, do the thing together, and then give you time to do it on your own with your partner.
If you notice your partner fall behind, please help them catch up!
4
Do not close any tabs today!
While we're in class, do not close the tabs unless we say it's okay.
We'll often refer you back to certain ones by referencing the icon and text.
5
Open up a new tab and go to the Library's home page.
6
Let's go over the Library's webpage + tabs.
7
Chat with a librarian!
These are what we call the "tabs"!
8
Do not use MinerQuest for Nursing research!
9
Let's find our Nursing Research Guide so we can find the databases we use!
Nursing
Search for 'Nursing' in the search box
10
Click on any bold underlined Nursing link to get to the Nursing Research Guide
11
You should be here!
12
Find NURS 2303 in the navigation bar
13
Download the two Word documents and make sure you can edit them!
14
If you're on Chrome, the downloads appear at the bottom.
15
Click 'Enable Editing' to edit the Worksheet and add your & partner's names
Florence Nightingale and Dr. Sarah Y. Jimenez
After opening the Word docs...
16
Some of you may find that you already know some of the concepts we're covering in class.
Some of your peers may not.
We appreciate your patience and attention while we're covering the material and ask that you please don't try to move ahead!
17
There is a lot of explaining before starting the assignment, but it will move fast once we start.
18
We will...
Learn about qualitative, quantitative, & mixed methods research in the evidence pyramid.
Learn about academic/peer-reviewed/scholarly article structure and how to read one without reading all of it.
Identify keywords for our case study.
Learn how to use different databases.
19

Quantitative + Qualitative + Mixed
Research Methods
Studies collect different data in different ways, determining whether the study is qualitative, quantitative, or mixed.
Outcomes distinguish the type of study.
23
Quantitative = answers "what or how"
Qualitative = answers "why"
behind a phenomenon, correlation or behavior.
Quantitative often sheds light on cause-effect relationships and confirms or disproves hypotheses.
Qualitative gathers data through feedback and input by study participants.
24
25
Quantitative Study Methods
Experiments
Questionnaires
Surveys
Database reports
Can be numerically analyzed, yes/no answers on questionnaires/surveys can be turned into quantifiable data
26
Qualitative Study Methods
Interviews
Focus groups
Documents
Personal accounts (perspectives/feelings)
Observation
Researchers collect data through unstructured or semi-structured interview formats for comprehensive perspective.
27
Mixed Methods
A combination of any quantitative method and qualitative method.
A study is looking at effective strategies for nurse retention in an acute hospital.
They conduct a survey to estimate the impact of organization of nursing care on nurse reported intention to leave and also conduct in-depth semi-structured interviews to gauge reasons stated for intention to leave
28
These are all different study types and are either quantitative, qualitative or mixed methods.
29
Much simpler version for now!
30
Today, we are looking for two different article types.
31
An original study that measure the effectiveness of a new intervention or treatment. Randomization reduces bias! I
32
Cochrane Systematic Reviews
A literature review, not an original study!
33
You might also see these other types when doing your research!
34

Study types & Data Collection Methods
Quantitative
Randomized Controlled/clinical/pilot Trial
Randomized Clinical Trial
Systematic Review
and more... that you'll learn about in Phase 3.
If it has a statistical analysis, it is quantitative OR mixed methods if it has a qualitative data method
Qualitative

Focus group
Systematic reviews

38
If you're not sure what type of article you're looking at, ask your librarian!

Original Research Studies are all organized the same way! They always have a journal title, article title and authors and...
Abstract
Introduction
Literature Review
Methods
Results
Discussion
Conclusion
The parts of your article are easy to identify because every section is labeled, but that isn't the case all the time.

When you're doing research, you don't need to read all the pages if you don't have to.
Just read the:
Introduction
Conclusion
Discussion, if you need more information.
51
You have 7 minutes to answer question #1 with your partner.
Please raise your hand if you have any questions and we'll be right there.
52
Okay, you can close these tabs now.
Open the other Word document, the "Case Scenario"
You have 1 minute to read it and think of keywords (#hashtags ) you would use to find evidence for our patient.
53
Open Ended
What word(s) would you use to describe our patient?
54
Let's answer Question #2 together.
Our keywords should all be the same.
55
Go to our Nursing Research Guide
Let's go to our databases!
Click on this tab to see our most used databases
Biomedical
Nursing + other Health Sciences
U.S. Government's BioMedical Database
International biomedical database - great for uncommon US interventions
Cochrane Systematic Reviews
Textbooks
56
You can search these two together because they're both EBSCO databases.
The name of the database will never be EBSCO.
They all look the same, but have different names.
Click on MEDLINE.
57
Click on Choose Databases and find CINAHL. Check the box and hit OK.
58
Databases work with Boolean operators
AND, OR, NOT
Databases can't read sentences like Google!
59
How does chf affect women's health?
60
Use the filters AKA limiters to narrow your search results to a specific time frame.
We always hear "within the last 5 years" from Nursing professors.
61
This is still broad, but we will work with this for now.
The access link moves to the top left when you click on any title.

63
Let's look for a Randomized Controlled Trial using the filters.
Click on Advanced Search below the search bars.
64
Change the Publication Type filter to 'Randomized Controlled Trial' for both MEDLINE + CINAHL.
Yes, you do it twice, or as many times as you have databases, if it is an available filter.
65
Our results are now at:
Answer Question #3, using female AND any other keyword besides CHF.
Make sure it is within the last 5 years and that it is a Randomized Controlled Trial.
You will have 7 minutes to do this with your partner.
66
Close any tabs you used for Q#3.
Find the Nursing Guide tab
Access Cochrane Library
Click on Advanced Search on the top left hand corner.
67
Enter basic terms -- There isn't always a Cochrane systematic review for every topic out there.
68
Be sure you're in the Cochrane Reviews tab. If there are no reviews, the database will show you the next tab with results.
69
All the information you need is right on this page!
70
Answer Question #4 and find a Cochrane Review on your topic.
You have 4 minutes to choose a review and answer the question with your partner.
71
Close the tabs for Cochrane
Find the Nursing Guide tab
Click on the Point-of-Care Tools & Clinical Information tab
Click on the DynaMed Plus (EBSCO) link
72
Search for the condition CHF.
73
Locate your condition
Click on Management.
74
Search for any condition that our patient has and answer Question #5.
75
Save your document and upload it to Blackboard.
See you in the Fall!
