How are you feeling today?

3

Today's class

  1. You have an assignment that is due at the end of class.

  2. You will work in pairs, but each of you still has to upload your own document to Blackboard.

    1. Make sure both your names are on the assignment.

  3. We will do it together - We will show you a thing, do the thing together, and then give you time to do it on your own with your partner.

  4. If you notice your partner fall behind, please help them catch up!

4

Do not close any tabs today!

While we're in class, do not close the tabs unless we say it's okay.

We'll often refer you back to certain ones by referencing the icon and text.

media

5

Open up a new tab and go to the Library's home page.

media

6

Let's go over the Library's webpage + tabs.

7

media

Chat with a librarian!

These are what we call the "tabs"!

8

media

Do not use MinerQuest for Nursing research!

9

media

Let's find our Nursing Research Guide so we can find the databases we use!

Nursing

Search for 'Nursing' in the search box

10

media

Click on any bold underlined Nursing link to get to the Nursing Research Guide

11

You should be here!

After opening the Word docs...

16

Some of you may find that you already know some of the concepts we're covering in class.

Some of your peers may not.

We appreciate your patience and attention while we're covering the material and ask that you please don't try to move ahead!

media

17

There is a lot of explaining before starting the assignment, but it will move fast once we start.

media

18

We will...

  • Learn about qualitative, quantitative, & mixed methods research in the evidence pyramid.

  • Learn about academic/peer-reviewed/scholarly article structure and how to read one without reading all of it.

  • Identify keywords for our case study.

  • Learn how to use different databases.

Quantitative + Qualitative + Mixed

Research Methods

Studies collect different data in different ways, determining whether the study is qualitative, quantitative, or mixed.

Outcomes distinguish the type of study.

23

Quantitative = answers "what or how"

Qualitative = answers "why"

behind a phenomenon, correlation or behavior.

Quantitative often sheds light on cause-effect relationships and confirms or disproves hypotheses.

Qualitative gathers data through feedback and input by study participants.

24

media

25

Quantitative Study Methods

  • Experiments

  • Questionnaires

  • Surveys

  • Database reports

Can be numerically analyzed, yes/no answers on questionnaires/surveys can be turned into quantifiable data

26

Qualitative Study Methods

  • Interviews

  • Focus groups

  • Documents

  • Personal accounts (perspectives/feelings)

  • Observation

Researchers collect data through unstructured or semi-structured interview formats for comprehensive perspective.

27

Mixed Methods

  • A combination of any quantitative method and qualitative method.

A study is looking at effective strategies for nurse retention in an acute hospital.

They conduct a survey to estimate the impact of organization of nursing care on nurse reported intention to leave and also conduct in-depth semi-structured interviews to gauge reasons stated for intention to leave

28

media

These are all different study types and are either quantitative, qualitative or mixed methods.

29

media

Much simpler version for now!

30

media

Today, we are looking for two different article types.

31

media

An original study that measure the effectiveness of a new intervention or treatment. Randomization reduces bias! I

32

media

Cochrane Systematic Reviews

A literature review, not an original study!

33

media

You might also see these other types when doing your research!

37

Study types & Data Collection Methods

  • Quantitative

    • Randomized Controlled/clinical/pilot Trial

    • Randomized Clinical Trial

    • Systematic Review

    • and more... that you'll learn about in Phase 3.

      • If it has a statistical analysis, it is quantitative OR mixed methods if it has a qualitative data method

  • Qualitative

    • interview

    • Focus group

    • Systematic reviews

    • If it has a statistical analysis, it is qualitative OR mixed methods!

38

If you're not sure what type of article you're looking at, ask your librarian!

Original Research Studies are all organized the same way! They always have a journal title, article title and authors and...

  1. Abstract

  2. Introduction

  3. Literature Review

  4. Methods

  5. Results

  6. Discussion

  7. Conclusion

The parts of your article are easy to identify because every section is labeled, but that isn't the case all the time.

50

When you're doing research, you don't need to read all the pages if you don't have to.

Just read the:

  1. Introduction

  2. Conclusion

  3. Discussion, if you need more information.

51

You have 7 minutes to answer question #1 with your partner.

Please raise your hand if you have any questions and we'll be right there.

52

Okay, you can close these tabs now.

Open the other Word document, the "Case Scenario"

You have 1 minute to read it and think of keywords (#hashtags ) you would use to find evidence for our patient.

media

53

Open Ended

What word(s) would you use to describe our patient?

54

media

Let's answer Question #2 together.

Our keywords should all be the same.

55

media

Go to our Nursing Research Guide

Let's go to our databases!

Biomedical

Nursing + other Health Sciences

U.S. Government's BioMedical Database

International biomedical database - great for uncommon US interventions

Cochrane Systematic Reviews

Textbooks

56

media

You can search these two together because they're both EBSCO databases.

The name of the database will never be EBSCO.

They all look the same, but have different names.

Click on MEDLINE.

57

Click on Choose Databases and find CINAHL. Check the box and hit OK.

Databases can't read sentences like Google!

How does chf affect women's health?

60

media

Use the filters AKA limiters to narrow your search results to a specific time frame.

We always hear "within the last 5 years" from Nursing professors.
