2
Multiple Choice
What is the BEST definition of an OBSERVATION in Science?
Something we can see
An idea we have based on our senses,
The use of any or all of our five senses to gather information
An explanation of something we see or hear
3
Multiple Choice
What is the BEST definition of an INFERENCE in Science?
A prediction of what might happen in the future based on what we observe
A possible explanation of what has happened based on what we observe
Facts about what we see or hear
Something someone tells us is true
4
Multiple Choice
Which of the following is NOT an observation?
People must have thrown bottles into the river
There are bottles in the river
The water in the river is brown
There are houses and factory buildings next to the river
5
Open Ended
Write ONE observation about this picture.
6
Open Ended
Write ONE inference that is linked to your observation in the previous question.
(You will write a second inference in the next question)
7
Open Ended
Write a second inference about this picture that is also linked to your observation.
8
Open Ended
I want to heat a small amount of liquid safely in a laboratory. List ALL the peices of lab equipment I would need to use.
(Don't include anything that I wouldn't need to use)
9
10
Multiple Choice
What is the best definition of "matter"?
Anything that makes a sound and takes up space
Anything that has weight and gives off light
Anything that takes up space and has weight
Anything that makes a sound and gives off light
11
Multiple Choice
What is matter made of?
Thomas
Atoms
Stuff
Nothing
12
Atoms are made of protons, neutrons and electrons.
Protons and neutrons are found in the nucleus, in the middle of the atom.
Electrons are found around the outside of the nucleus.
13
Multiple Choice
What are the three things that make up all atoms?
Protons, new towns and electrodes
Prunes, neutrons and electricity
Protons, neutrons and electrons
Nucleus, Protons and Electrons
14
Do you remember this diagram from your Science Book?
15
Mixtures are not pure because there is more than one substance . Mixtures are not chemically bonded together.
Elements and compounds are pure substances.
Pure Substances
Classifying Matter
Some text here about the topic of discussion
Matter can be classified as either PURE SUBSTANCES or MIXTURES
Mixtures
16
Multiple Select
Select ALL of the pure substances.
Elements
Compounds
Mixtures
17
Multiple Choice
Mixtures are not a type of matter.
True
False
18
An element is a pure substance made up of only one type of atom.
ELEMENTS
EVERY element is listed on the Periodic Table of Elements
19
20
Multiple Select
Select ALL of the true statements about elements.
Elements are found on the periodic table
An element is made up of one type of atom
Elements can be either metals or non-metals
All element symbols have a capital letter
Some element symbols have a capital and a lower case letter

23
Multiple Choice
The three diagrams all show examples of ELEMENTS
True
False
24
A compound is a pure substance made up of two or more DIFFERENT elements chemically bonded together
COMPOUNDS
For example: Water, H2O, is a compound made up of 2 hydrogen atoms and 1 oxygen atom.
The two different types of atoms are all bonded together.
All compounds have a chemical formula which shows us what they are made of.
Some compounds also have a more common name that we know them by.
25
26
Multiple Select
Identify ALL of the compounds from the pictures
27
Open Ended
The chemical symbol for water is H2O. Water contains 2 hydrogen atoms and 1 oxygen atom.
The chemical symbol for sulfuric acid is H2SO4. What atoms make up sulfuric acid?
28
29
Open Ended
Carefully look at the diagram and identify all of the boxes that contain mixtures.
30
Multiple Select
Select ALL of the box(es) contain a mixture of elements?

Open Ended
After you have been swimming in the sea, your hair can sometimes feel crusty after it has dried.
Using your knowledge of separating mixtures, EXPLAIN IN DETAIL why this happens.
32
Physical Change
During a physical change, no new substance is formed.
Signs of a physical change include:
A change of shape or size
A change of state (solid to liquid to gas, or vice versa)
An expected colour change (e.g. when you dissolve raro powder in water)
Physical changes are normally easy to reverse.
(unless you have changed the shape/size of something by breaking it)
33
Chemical Change
During a chemical reaction, new substances are formed. Chemical bonds are broken and/or formed.
Signs of a chemical change include:
An unexpected colour change
Bright light is seen
Heat being released (feels hot) or absorbed (feels cold), without actively heating or cooling the substance
Fizzing /Bubbles being formed (without heating the substance)
A new odour
Chemical changes are very difficult to reverse. i.e. you can't change it back
34
Multiple Select
Identify which of these are CHEMICAL CHANGES
(There may be more than one)
Breaking an egg
Heating up the oven
Baking a cake
Using baking soda so the cake will rise
35
Multiple Select
Identify which of these are a PHYSICAL CHANGE
(There may be more than one)
Burning wood in a camp fire
Boiling water which then evaporates.
Cooking mussels in the boiling water.
The mussel shells opening when they are cooked.
36
Open Ended
The correct answer to the previous question is shown.
Carefully explain why the two selected boxes ARE physical changes AND why the other two ARE NOT physical changes.
