How to say "I did something"

To make the passé composé, you just need

Subject (Je, Tu, Il, Elle, On, Nous, Vous, Ils, Elles)

Helping Verb (avoir or être)

Past participle

er verbs - drop the "er" and replace with é - mangé

ir verbs - drop the "r" - fini

re verbs - ddrop the "re" and replace with a "u"​ - vendu

So when do we use "etre" ?

With intranstive verbs (verbs that do not take a direct object).

Example: I ate an apple. "To eat" is a transitive verb. It can answer the question "What did I eat".

I went to the store. This is intransitive because you can't answer the questions "What did I went?" or "Who did I went?​"
