Unit = One

A unit fraction identifies how much one part of the whole equals. The numerator is always one, and the denominator is the total number of parts.

Identifying the Fraction From a Picture:

  • Count the number of parts you are talking about (look at the question to know if you are looking at the number of parts shaded or not shaded). This number is your numerator.

  • The total number of parts in ONE whole is your denominator. No matter how many wholes you have, your denominator is just the numbers of parts in ONE of them.
