Pluralist Views

  • The concentration of media ownership has been exaggerated

  • There are still many small media companies that tend to be forgotten when discussing the big ones

  • They believe that the biggest media corportions do not necessarily stay successful

  • New companies such as Google are challenging the older ones

  • Big media companies are owned by shareholders (millions of people)

9

Marxist Views

  • Concerned about the recent trends in media ownership

  • Given to the few very powerful conglomerates that support capitalism

  • Marxist do not see choice, as pluralist do

  • "Illusion of Choice" - lots of different media products all based on the same very limited set of ideas (e.g.: newspapers)

  • The media ignores the important news stories, and turns a blind eye to capitalism

10

Globalisaation

Media is part of Globalisation

  • Communication via the media is now instant around the globe

  • Unfolding news events can be watched as they happen, even on the other side of the world

  • Media create a sense of sharing a common home, "Spaceship Earth" or a "Global Village".

  • Print and early broadcasting media also helped people feel a sense of belonging on both national and global levels

11

Features of Globalisation and Media

  • The global media are dominated by a small number of huge conglomerates

  • Global media is based on Western societies and culture

  • Media produces are made for global rather than national audiences and contain elements that may appeal globally

  • Local culture may be swamped by Western Cultures spread by the media (impact on language)

  • Non-western media may be able to reach new global audience (Bollywood films)
