​We use would like when we want something but we want to sound polite.

e.g.

I would like a cold drink. ( I want a cold drink.)

Would you like to join us for dinner? (Do you want to join us for dinner?)​

A would like question usually takes the following short answer:

Would you like a drink? - Yes, please. / No, thank you.

e.g.
