Convection Currents and the Mantle
3
3 Types of Heat transfer
Radiation- transfer of heat through empty space
Conduction- transfer of heat by direct contact
Convection- transfer of heat involving the movement of fluids-liquids and gases
4
The DEEPER you go inside the earth, the GREATER the TEMPERATURE becomes
5
Lithosphere and Asthenosphere
Lithosphere: Rigid surface shell that includes upper mantle and crust ( here is where "Plate tectonics" work), cool layer
Asthenosphere: Layer below the Lithosphere, part of the mantle, weak and deformable (Can be reshaped). This layer deforms as plates move, partially melting of the material happens here. (Deeper so this layer is getting hotter in temperature).
Some text here about the topic of discussion
6
Asthenosphere
Heat from Earth’s core and mantle cause hot columns of mantle material to rise
Hot material spreads and forces the cooler material to sink
7
Density
A measure of how much mass there is in a volume of a substance.
m/V=p
8
Quick review of Mass and Volume
Volume- amount of space something takes up
Mass- amount of matter in an object
9
Therefore...
Mass- how heavy/full something is
Volume- how much space it takes up
