Learning Targets

  • I can collect the correct data to answer a question and use the correct units.

  • I can explain the difference between categorical and numerical data.

What is one thing you notice? One thing you wonder?

  • The numbers represent age based on the label.

  • Each X represents one person. For example, it looks like there is 1 40-year-old represented but 3 44-year-olds.

  • There are a total of 20 people represented.

This is a line plot.

You will use the same type of representation, but with dots instead of X's. These are called dot plots.

5

Definition - A way to represent the distribution of a numerical data set

Additional Information / Examples - sometimes called a line plot

If you haven't already, get a vocab. note catcher from the front table and fill in the following. This note catcher will be collected for a grade at the end of the unit.

Remember the survey you took earlier this week? Some of those questions gave us numerical data, and some questions gave us categorical data. Look through the following slides to see our class results!

Zip Codes: Numerical or Categorical?

Even though Zip Codes have numbers, they are categorical data, not numerical data. They are not quantities or measurements, but rather labels that happen to be numbers. We can meaningfully compare numerical data (e.g., 6 minutes is greater than 4 minutes, or 7 years is less than 12 years), but we cannot do the same with the numbers in area codes or zip codes. It would not make sense to say that the zip code is 19104 is less than 63105.
