​1. at, in, on

at 一般指小地方;in 一般指大地方或某个范围之内;on 往往表示“在某个物体的表面”。

He arrived in Shanghai yesterday. 他昨天到上海。

They arrived at a small village before dark. 他们在天黑前到达一个小村庄。

There is a big hole in the wall. 墙上有个大洞。

The teacher hung a picture on the wall. 老师把一幅画挂在墙上。

2. over, above, on

over, on 和 above 都可表示“在……上面”,但具体含义不同。Over 表示位置高于某物,在某物的正上方,其反义词是under。above 也表示位置高于某物,但不一定在正上方,其反义词是below。On 指两个物体表面接触,一个在另一的上面。例如:

There is a bridge over the river. 河上有一座桥。

We flew above the clouds. 我们飞越云层。

They put some flowers on the teacher's desk. 他们把一些花放在讲桌上。​

3. across, through

across 和 through 均可表示“从这一边到另一边”,但用法不同。Across 的含义与 on 有关,表示动作在某一物体的表面进行。Through 的含义与 in 有关,表示动作是在三维空间进行。例如:

The dog ran across the grass. 狗跑过草地。

The boy swam across the river. 那男孩游过河。

They walked through the forest. 他们穿过森林。

I pushed through the crowds. 我挤过人群。​

  • Usually: 习惯,经常 omething that happens or one does as a habit ,so it is more regular and predictable.

    • He usually spends his vacation in Italy with his friends.

  • Always: 更加频繁,总是 for something that happens or one does in any case.

    • Whatever happens , he always arrives on time .

Review and Practice: Retell the story(really, quite 形前be后)

The Jones family is very happy today. It's a beautiful day, and they're in the park.

The Chen family is at home in the yard today. The sun is shining, and the birds are singing. It's a beautiful day!

Mr. Chen is planting flowers. Mrs. Chen is drinking lemonade and reading a book. Emily and Jason Chen are playing with the dog. And Jennifer Chen is sleeping.

The Chen family is very happy today. It's a beautiful day, and they're at home in the yard.

​Everybody at 159 River Street is very busy today. Mr. Price is cleaning his bedroom. Ms. Hunter is painting her bathroom. Ricky Gomez is feeding his cat. Mr. and Mrs. Wong are washing their clothes. Mrs. Martin is doing her exercises. And Judy and Larry Clark are fixing their car.

I'm busy, too. I'm washing my windows...and of course,I'm watching all my neighbors. It's a very busy day at 159 River Street.

​Describing people and things

​Height: tall or short. Thin and tall -- lanky. Short and small -- petite.

​

Weigh: curvy, well-built, full-bodied or heavy, or has some meat on their bones. Overweight (might seem rude). The opposite of overweight can be thin, slim or skinny.

​

Hair: blonde, a blonde. (This means blonde can be used as a noun or an adjective.) A person with dark hair can be called a brunette. Someone with red hair can be called a redhead. 

short-haired or long-haired; curly, straight or wavy hair.

Sometimes hair can also be frizzy, which is when it looks puffy with small, tight curls. If someone has no hair at all on their head, they are bald.

Hair that covers the chin and cheeks is called a beard. When there’s hair only above the lips it’s a moustache. A beard that’s only on the chin can be called a goatee. “He has a beard.”

Overall: attractive, beautiful, pretty, gorgeous (very beautiful). handsome (men).

Both men and women can be good-looking.

Very casually: hot or not much to look at.

​

Dressing: smartly dressed; look smart; well-dressed; stylish or trendy; unfashionable

​Dear Mother,

I'm writing from our hotel at Sludge Beach. Ralph and I are on vacation with the children for a few days. We're happy to be here, but to tell the truth, we're having a few problems.

The weather isn't very good. In fact, it's cold and cloudy. Right now I'm looking out the window,and it's raining cats and dogs.

The children aren't very happy. In fact, they're bored and they're having a terrible time. Right now they're sitting on the bed, playing computer games and watching TV.

The restaurants here are expensive, and the food isn't very good. In fact, Ralph is at a clinic right now. He's having problems with his stomach.

​ARTHUR IS VERY ANGRY

​

It's late at night. Arthur is sitting on his bed, and he's looking at his clock. His neighbors are making a lot of noise, and Arthur is VERY angry.

The people in Apartment 2 are dancing. The man in Apartment 3 is vacuuming his rug. The woman in Apartment 4 is playing the drums. The teenagers in Apartment 5 are listening to loud music. The dog in Apartment 6 is barking. And the people in Apartment 7 are having a big argument.

It's very late, and Arthur is tired and angry. What a terrible night!
