Social: History

Many countries in Southeast Asia were once controlled by European nations. For example, the Philippines was controlled by Spain and Indonesia was controlled by the Dutch, and Vietnam and Laos were controlled by France. When Europeans took over these places they brought with them their language. ​

Also Southeast Asian countries were influenced by Arab traders who brought Islam to Malaysia and Indonesia and the Chinese who brought Buddhism to the mainland.​
