Vocabulary

Measure of Center (Measure of Central Tendency): 3 ways to describe the center of a data set.

MeAn: The average of a data set. To calculate Add up all the numbers and Divide by how many numbers there are.

MOde: The number or numbers that occur most OFTEN. There can be more than one mode, if a number appears the same amount in the data set: 2222 and 3333. There can be NO mode if there is not a number that is repeated.

6

Vocabulary, continued

Median: The value appearing at the center of a sorted version of the list, or the MeAn of the two central values if the list contains an even number of values.

  • Put the numbers in order from least to greatest.

  • Check off the smallest then the largest.

  • Keep moving to the middle of the data set.

  • If it is an odd set of numbers circle the middle number. There will be the same amount of numbers on each side of the circled number.

  • If it is an even set of numbers circle the two middle numbers and find the MeAn. (Add two numbers and Divide by 2)
