​The letter “j” makes the /j/ sound when it comes before an “a” “o” or “u” in a word that is most often Anglo-Saxon. Let us look at a few examples

Rule 1

​1. The letter “j” makes the /dʒ/ sound

  • job

  • jump

  • jostle

  • jacket

  • jungle

The letter “g” makes the /j/ sound when followed by an “e” “i” or “y” in a word that is often derived from Greek or Latin.

Let us look at a few examples

The letters “-dge” make the /j/ sound at the end of a one-syllable word.

These words are most often Anglo-Saxon.

*A diphthong is a sound formed by combining two vowels in a single syllable. E.g. boy, coin ​

The letter “d” makes the /j/ sound when used with the connective “u.” When the “u” connects the root or base word ending with a “d” to the suffix, the “d” makes the /j/ sound.
