§ In a monarchy, a king or queen is Head of State. The British monarchy is known as a constitutional monarchy. This means that, while The Sovereign is Head of State, the ability to make and pass legislation resides with an elected Parliament.

§Although the British Sovereign no longer has a political or executive role, he or she continues to play an important part in the life of the nation.

§As Head of State, The Monarch undertakes constitutional and representational duties which have developed over one thousand years of history. In addition to these State duties, The Monarch has a less formal role as 'Head of Nation'. The Sovereign acts as a focus for national identity, unity and pride; gives a sense of stability and continuity; officially recognises success and excellence; and supports the ideal of voluntary service.

§ In all these roles The Sovereign is supported by members of their immediate family.

§ As Head of State, The King has to remain strictly neutral with respect to political matters, unable to vote or stand for election. But The King does have important ceremonial and formal roles in relation to the Government of the UKsuch as the summoning or dissolution of Parliament, the power to dismiss and appoint a prime minister, the power to grant Royal Assent to bills, making them valid laws.

§ The King as Sovereign is Head of the Armed Forces, Commander-in- Chief, which means "ultimate authority" of the military, with officers and personnel swearing allegiance only to the monarch.

§In the United Kingdom, The Monarch's title includes the words 'Defender of the Faith'.  This means a specific role in both the Church of England and the Church of Scotland.

§Although the monarch's authority over the Church of England is largely ceremonial, the position is still very relevant to the church and is mostly observed in a symbolic capacity.

The Supreme Governor formally appoints high-ranking members of the church on the advice of the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, who is in turn advised by church leaders.
