What was Reconstruction?
Reconstruction (1865-1877), the turbulent era following the Civil War.
It was the effort to reintegrate Southern states from the Confederacy and 4 million newly-freed people into the United States.
Making the United States "whole again" after the damage of the Civil War.

Freedman's Bureau- provided food, shelter, clothing, medical services, and land to displaced Southerners, including newly freed African Americans.
Military Reconstruction Act-divided the South into five military districts governed by previous Union generals
Compromise of 1877-Democrats agreed that Rutherford B. Hayes would become president in exchange for the withdrawal of federal troops from the South and the granting of home rule in the South. Ending Reconstruction.
Civil Rights Act- All people born in the USA are citizens. No allowance of involuntary servitude.

What happened to previous slaves and the South?
Many Ex-Slaves with no money and no where to go did something called sharecropping(they would work at the plantations for a very small profit)
The South passed "Black Codes" which allowed them to continue to discriminate African Americans.
